Julie rocks her hypnobirth with heart condition!

Introducing our hypnobirthing baby girl Roxy.

I had the most amazing birth at King Eddies in Perth under the care of a fabulous obstetrician. He had no experience of hypnobirthing, but willingly tried to keep it as close to my birth plan as possible, with me having a heart condition. My baby and I were both on heart monitor traces, plus I was on a drip for Strep B, magnesium, potassium and fluids.

My membranes released at home and when I got to the hospital I was 6cm and sitting on my fit ball eating lasagne!!

I laboured for 12 hours, which seemed like 2 hours really and just breathed through all my surges calmly and pain free….I kid you not!!!.

My Obstetrician said he only ever saw one other person like me and that was 1994, and he has delivered over a thousand babies.

He was kind of pushing me to have an epidural as he didn’t want my heart under too much pressure when it came to the pushing stage.  I declined as I still couldn’t believe I was 9cm.  Anyway, long story short Roxy was born with no drugs although I did require a little help in the end from a kiwi suction cap (as she was coming out sideways) because of my heart condition but not once did my heart rate or Roxy’s change during a surge or at the bearing down stage.  He said she was a very happy baby which was unusual given my case.

When Roxy appeared she never cried and was so alert looking around the room at everyone.  Eight days later and she’s feeding and sleeping and rarely cries.  We are blessed that we took the Hypnobirthing course with Vicki Hobbs and my partner was amazing throughout also.

My obstetrician is now looking into hypnobirthing and his intern is writing a paper on me and the birth.
