We’re incredibly fortunate here in Western Australia to have a growing number of exceptional Privately Practising Midwives (PPM’s) offering personalised, woman-centred maternity care. When I first created this directory, only a handful of midwives were working privately, and now the list continues to grow, which is such a positive shift for women across Perth and regional WA.
A Privately Practising Midwife is an independent midwife who is not employed by a hospital or government program such as the Community Midwifery Program. However, some PPM’s hold admitting rights at hospitals like King Edward Memorial Hospital, Fiona Stanley Hospital and Rockingham Hospital, allowing for continuity of care even in the event of a hospital transfer.
When you choose to engage a PPM, all your antenatal appointments will be with that midwife – either in your home or at their clinic, depending on what you agree upon. You’ll have the same midwife supporting you throughout your pregnancy, birth, and postnatal period. This continuity of care is proven to improve birth outcomes and satisfaction. Your midwife will also work closely with a trusted backup midwife who will attend your birth alongside them (as two midwives are required to be present), or step in if your midwife is unwell or unavailable.
Many private midwives are eligible for Medicare rebates, meaning you may be able to claim part of your antenatal and postnatal visits – something worth confirming when you speak to them.
This directory has been created to support you in your research and birth planning. It includes details provided directly by the midwives, though some may choose not to list certain information publicly or may work by referral only.
Every midwife listed here brings their own unique experience, skillset, and unwavering commitment to supporting women through physiological birth. More importantly, they are advocates, ensuring your wishes, choices, and voice are respected throughout your care.
I recommend phoning midwives directly (rather than emailing) to check availability around your estimated due date and then arranging to meet. Connection is key, so take time to sit down with them, get a feel for their approach, and see who you naturally resonate with.
Choosing a privately practising midwife is one of the most valuable investments you can make in your pregnancy and birth experience.
If you know of a midwife who should be included in this directory, please let me know. As mentioned, some PPM’s prefer to work via referral or may not wish to advertise publicly, especially those with hospital access, who reserve that as an option for home birth transfers only.
